President Bush admitted to abandoning limited government principles when he announced the bailout this morning, “If we were to allow the free market to take its course now, it would almost certainly lead to disorderly bankruptcy and liquidation for the automakers.”

It is sad when our President has failed to uphold his obligation to uphold the Constitution. For example, he has voted to limit our Freedom of Speech through signing “McCain/Feingold Campaign Finance” legislation into law.

Whether or not, you agree or disagree with this particular post, you have to admit that President Bush has done more damage to the free market economy through his eight years in office.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Why Transparency is Needed in Virginia? RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Transparency legislation is important, albeit controversial due to security reasons (after all, you do not want certain information being placed on a report that could compromise your state’s security).  However, the time has come for transparency legislation for Virginia.  With the economy in recession, there are impending tax increases and budget cuts in the cards.

So, wouldn’t it be nice to see exactly what the Commonwealth of Virginia spends on earmarks or unnecessary programs?

Transparency legislation has been passed to a degree for the Federal government.  With the passage of the Coburn-Obama transparency bill, people can see how much money we are spending through earmark legislation.  Additionally, Virginians would benefit from seeing the total amount of spending and be able to hold their legislators accountable for their actions.  We do have a valuable asset with Richmond Sunlight, but there should be something that is ran by the Virginia government that allows voters to monitor how the state spends the taxpayer’s money.

Groups like Americans for Prosperity, Americans for Tax Reform, and CATO Institute all advocate for transparency legislation at the state levels.  They realize the potential for success that transparency can have at the state levels.  It helps to eliminate wasteful spending and unnecessary programs.  This is why we need it now in this fledgling economy.  It will be interesting to see if this will gain further momentum in Virginia and other states during the legislative sessions.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Kaine’s Budget = Tax Hikes for Virginia RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Virginia is for tax hikes.  In Tim Kaine’s Virginia, you can be assured that change will be sucked out of your pockets by the tax-uum (tax vacuum).   With our state experiencing a $3 billion deficit, a tax hike is no doubt in the back of Tim Kaine’s mind to raise taxes as a means to compensate for Virginia’s shortfall.

Of course, Kaine has ensured he would implement “$358 million in annual spending reductions.”  Aside from the spending restrictions, Kaine has decided to slash jobs, enact a hiring freeze, and even reduced his own salary.  Although he mentions that he will keep the budget balanced without a tax increase, this is just a false assurance, as Kaine will most likely be forced to make a tax increase somewhere along the line.   That being said, Kaine should be applauded for at least addressing the issue by making cuts within his own office before pondering tax increases immediately.

Although there are cuts within the Governor’s office, there will be cuts in other areas.  Education funding will be slashed, as higher education will suffer with a 15% reduction.   As attending a four-year college or university is expensive (trust me, I can attest as I am paying an exorbitant amount every month in student loans), more students will be facing higher tuition rates.

As for health care, Kaine will be raising the cigarette tax.   This is the first in the pending tax hikes that Virginia will be facing.  Raising taxes is wrong and is not a common sense solution.  As a non-smoker, I still feel raising the cigarette tax will do more harm than good.  Medicaid reductions will also be limited due to a possible demand in obtaining these services.

Lastly, transportation was mentioned.  VDOT’s services will be streamlined and there will be layoffs within VDOT.  Kaine mentioned Obama’s dedication to work on improving the transportation infrastructure.

As someone who is against any (and every) tax hike, I have a feeling Kaine wanted to water down his budget talk to avoid addressing an issue that would enrage Virginians.  Tax hikes do not solve the problems we face, and in fact, they will cause more harm than good in our fledgling economy.  We are in an economic recession and jobs are being cut all over the place.   The General Assembly session will no doubt be interesting to watch in 2009.

New York Governor David Paterson is proposing a budget with huge new tax increases on New Yorkers. With the economy facing difficult times, the last thing we can afford is new taxes on everything from hospitals, insurance policies, clothes and license plates – to “non diet” sodas, gross receipts and gasoline.

Meanwhile, Virginia is facing a $3 billion dollar deficit and the Governor is touting his budget cuts. Somewhere along the line, you know a tax hike might come our way as well. More on this topic later on today.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Time to Stop Earmarks! RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Is it me or am I getting sick and tired of watching the government use my hard-earned dollars to fund some frivolous project?   I hear it every night on the evening news or read it every morning in the newspaper that the government is funding some sort of wasteful “bridge to nowhere” project.  As a taxpayer, I say, “enough is enough.”  I struggle from paycheck to paycheck wondering how I am going to pay my rent or student loan debt.  Not that I am complaining, I budget and watch my spending.

This year, according to Citizens Against Government Waste, “the government has identified 11,610 projects at a cost of $17.2 Billion in the 12 Appropriations Acts in 2008.”   Why doesn’t this surprise me?  The tax and spend liberals (and RINOs…oops, I forgot that is a curse word) have earmarked billions on some wasteful projects.   Here is a little sampler of the earmarks and the legislator behind them:

      • $3,737,652 for six projects by Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee member Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), including: $1,646,394 for the McDowell Grove Dam Rood Plain/Wetlands Restoration Project in DuPage County; $107,244 for wildlife habitat improvement; and $36,741 for conservation science at Lincoln Park Zoo. This “free” zoo was established in 1868 after a pair of swans were given to the Lincoln Park Commissioners. Today, the zoo can be rented out for weddings, picnics, corporate events, and holiday parties.
      • $148,950 by Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and John Tester (D-Mont.) for the Montana Sheep Institute. According to the organization’s website, “The Montana Sheep Institute (MSI) is a cooperative project between Montana Wool Growers Association and Montana State University. The MSI is dedicated to developing and implementing non-traditional adjustment strategies that will increase the competitiveness of Montana’s lamb and wool in the world market. Our goal is to explore opportunities to increase the utilization of sheep in weed management programs and improve the profitability and competitiveness of the Montana Sheep Industry.” This is a b-a-a-a-a-d earmark. Since 2002, CAGW’s Pig Book has identified $2.8 million in pork for this research.
      • $11,972,075 for 17 projects by Senate CJS Appropriations Subcommittee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), including: $2,350,000 for Teach for America, New York, to engage teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); $893,000 for the National Aquarium in Baltimore Conservation and Education Programs for conservation and education programs of the marine environment National Aquarium of Baltimore; $178,600 for Johns Hopkins University Baltimore for the Johns Hopkins Prisoner Career Re-Entry Program to provide job training and placement.
      • $188,000 by Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Rep. Thomas Allen (D-Maine) for the Lobster Institute. The group’s website says, “The LOBSTER INSTITUTE is a cooperative program of research and education with the lobster industry at the University of Maine…” Not only has the Lobster Institute been working on its “Lobster Cam (TheLobstercam.com),” one its major accomplishments has been lobster dog biscuits: “Your dog can now be a lobster connoisseur. Blue Seal Feeds, Inc. has launched the newest addition to its dog biscuit line Blue Seal Lobster ‘Bisque-its’ based on a concept devised by the Lobster Institute at The University of Maine, and their commercialization partner Saltwater Marketing LLC.” That isn’t much of a treat for taxpayers.
      • $121,400,000 for 44 projects by House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman John Murtha (D-Pa.), including $23,000,000 for the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC). Rep. Murtha became infuriated by Rep. Mike Rogers’ (R-Mich.) motion to remove the NDIC earmark. According to Rogers, Rep. Murtha warned, “I hope you don’t have any earmarks in the defense appropriations bills because they are gone and you will not get any earmarks now and forever. … That’s the way I do it.” Since 1992, more than $509 million has been used to fund NDIC, which is administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ.). But DOJ has asked Congress to shut the NDIC down because its operations are duplicative. This project helped Rep. Murtha win CAGW’s 2007 Porker of the Year award.
      • $4,800,000 by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) for the Jamaica Bay Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area. The Gateway National Recreation Area’s website describes the Jamaica Bay Unit as “a wealth of history, nature and recreation, from New York City’s first major airport and coastal fortifications to a wildlife refuge and pristine beaches.” A nice place to swim away with defense dollars.
      • $787,200 by House appropriator Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) for advanced green design at the Museum of Natural History in Minneapolis. Admission to the museum is free to University of Minnesota faculty, staff, and students, while adults are charged $5.

Earmark legislation has become a huge problem for our elected officials in Washington.  We elect them, trusting that they will look out for the taxpayers’ interests, yet they choose to spend our money like drunken sailors.  The Republicans keep calling for a moratorium, yet Congress still keeps passing the earmarks through.  One would think with the government being officially bankrupt, there would be gradual cutbacks of earmarks.  I guess not!

Crystal Clear Conservative · Mark Sanford on the Bailouts RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

      H/T to Below the Beltway

It appears that South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is against the Detroit bailouts that may come back in the form of an earmark.  Sanford addressed a letter to President Bush urging him not to give money to Detroit, as it would create a wave of failing businesses coming to Washington and requesting more bailouts, which would lead to an economic crisis we could not handle.

Sanford said in his letter to Bush that bailing out failing businesses moves our economy “from a free market to a political based economy.”  Additionally, he mentions that it will be the hard work of Americans that help put our economy back on track.  Here is the attachment of the letter, which was on The Atlantic.

Sanford made another point that the unions have led to the current situation of the Big Three.   It is the truth, as I had mentioned in previous posts.  When the UAW continuously pays the union wages of $70 an hour, it becomes obvious why the situation looks so dismal at this point. (The Politico, December 15, 2008).

Sanford would be a great choice in 2012, as he is a strong conservative all across the board on life, liberty, and the economy.

According to the International Herald Tribune, Kennedy will be meeting with Gov. fire Coach Jim Zorn and Quarterback Jason Campbell.  This season has been among the worst for our beloved Redskins, and it seems like the two mentioned above have much to do with the direction of this season.

I know you can’t win every game, but we have lost the past few games due to sloppy playing and some key injuries of our players.  Additionally, when you lose to the Bengals (who are now 2-8 on the season), this also adds to the fire.

It is my hope for Redskins Nation that owner Daniel Snyder will fire Zorn and replace him with former Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Bill Cowher.  At least, we will have a coach who will crack down on Campbell and build up both the offense and defense.

UPDATE (As of 6:47 AM, Monday morning):  It is not just the coach and quarterback that is the problem.  Last night, amid pondering the emotional loss, I (CCC) realized that maybe I jumped to conclusion.  Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is also at fault.  When you can’t manage the team effectively by allowing players to take control and slam the coaches and hire a faulty coach (I still think Zorn is a horrible coach.), then you don’t have any right being the owner of a NFL team.  Maybe, one day, the Redskins can return to prominence.  Hopefully, next week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles will provide a glimmer of hope and revive our playoff hopes.

Will he or won’t he resign?  The embattled and scandal plagued Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has a decision to make, to stay and lead while under the possibility of being impeached or step down and have a special election to replace him.   This will be an interesting day for Illinois.

As of now, it looks like Blagojevich will be staying on, while facing impeachment.  Yesterday, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan was making the rounds on various political shows, like “Face the Nation” on CBS.  Madigan said, “We have heard that there is a possibility that tomorrow he will make an announcement where he will step aside.”  Madigan also mentioned that the Illinois legislature would be considering impeachment proceedings as well.

The obvious choice is that Blagojevich should do what is right and resign from his Governor’s seat.   When you are participating in corrupt behaviors like selling a Senate seat and probably other unmentioned crimes, it is best to step down to avert impeachment, etc.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Colin Powell’s Thoughts on the Republican Party RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Recently, CNN conducted an interview with former Secretary of State Colin Powell discussing his views on how the Republican party can begin winning again.  Unfortunately, his views were to push the party towards the middle, and he mentioned that Republicans need to stop talking about principles and stopped that we need to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh, what is he smoking (or drinking)???  Excuse me, Mr. Powell, but who do you think you are talking to?  Rush Limbaugh is a strong, unabashed conservative, who believes in improving the party.  Yes, I try to listen to him, when I get the chance.

Enough of this rant, I am going to move into the other components of his CNN interview.   Powell’s comments were particularly concerning with his statement that while it is okay being a conservative, it will also lead to the GOP being in the minority for a long time.

“I think the party has to take a hard look at itself,” Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday. “There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don’t object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority.”

Powell, who crossed party lines and endorsed President-elect Barack Obama just weeks before the election, said the GOP must see what is in the “hearts and minds” of African-American, Hispanic and Asian voters “and not just try to influence them by… the principles and dogma.”

Conservative values have been the hallmark of our party.  The values and principles that our party was founded on has attracted many voters in communities across the country.  When we are not tainted with corruption, our party has worked effectively to bring fiscal accountability to the forefront, government transparency, and protecting the sanctity of life.

I disagree with Powell’s statements.  Being moderate might win races in Northern Virginia or other liberal metropolitan areas in the U.S., it does not win races in Main Street America.

I do like a good wine tasting.  From time to time, I like to share a good wine review or two on this blog.   When the home improvements go through (end of December), you will see a separate page devoted to my wine/food reviews.

Tonight, my roommate offered me some of the wine she recently purchased at Trader Joe’s.  She had tried this wine, when going to pick up a few groceries, and fell in love with this Charles Shaw 2008 California Valdignie.

At first, I was skeptical, thinking that this was going to be like other Charles Shaw wines I had previously that were not so great.  However, I was pleasantly surprised by the hints of cherry and oak that were laced throughout the wine.  This beautiful red wine would pair well with a chocolate dessert or a warm pastry dish.  For the cost of $3.00, this dessert wine would be a great asset to your Christmas (or holiday) party.

Although, I am a huge fan of a fine Virginia Cabernet Franc (my favorites–Fox Meadow Vineyards Cab Franc or Fabbioli Cellars Cab Franc), this wine is a great departure (if you’re craving a taste of California).

Bob McDonnell’s quest for Governor recently received a strong endorsement from a 2012 Presidential contender.  Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal visited Richmond today for a press conference with McDonnell and to headline a fundraiser for the gubernatorial candidate.

Jindal said, “Bob McDonnell will be a great Governor for Virginia. He has a proven record of cracking down on sex offenders, he is committed to reining in spending, and more than anything, he knows how to cross party lines to get things done.”

Jindal is the nation’s youngest Governor, who previously served in Congress and was known for his stellar conservative record.

McDonnell also remarked, “Bobby Jindal has a record of reform and results as Governor of Louisiana. His leadership has demonstrated what can be accomplished when leaders work together across party lines to get things done for their states. That is the kind of Attorney General I have been, and that is the kind of Governor I will be if given the honor to serve in that office. People are hurting and we need to all work together to create jobs, bring businesses to Virginia, and help every Virginian get ahead. That is what I will do as Governor.”

Senator Harry Reid has called a cloture vote for Friday to vote on the bailout.  Call your Senator today and demand that they remember their oaths to office, stand up for the Constitution, and stop the bailouts.  It is the government for the people and by the people.  The people do not want the bailouts.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Lt. Governor Bill Bolling at the RPV Advance RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Lastly, I conclude my RPV Advance coverage with the speech by Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling during Saturday’s luncheon.   I have to say that Bolling’s speech was unifying and helped to rally our base.

Additionally, Bolling’s remarks are listed below.

Well thank you all very much and good morning.

What a pleasure it is for me to be here with you all again this weekend at the 25th annual Donald W. Huffman Republican Advance. Thanks for coming, and thanks for everything you do to help make the work and the success of our Republican Party possible.

And speaking of Jean Ann, let me take just minute at the outset of my remarks to introduce you to my best friend and team mate for the past 30 years, the mother of our two sons, and the Second Lady of the Commonwealth of Virginia, my wife, Jean Ann.

Jean Ann and I have enjoyed so much traveling across Virginia for these past six years getting to know each of you…..first as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor and then as the 40th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. We’ve made so many dear friends through our travels, and it’s good to be able to spend another weekend with you here at the beautiful Homestead Resort.

Now let me take care of one bit of housekeeping. A few years ago Jean Ann and I started a tradition at the Advance…..we starting giving away our annual Christmas ornament. I think the first year it was a pewter outline of the Commonwealth, the second year it was an etching of the State Capitol, last year it was an ornament in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of America at Jamestown, and this year it is a pewter pineapple, which each of you should have received at your seat. We hope you’ll take this home with you, proudly display it, think of us every time you see it, and know that it’s given in appreciation of everything you have done to make our public service possible.

Well my friends, we come together here this weekend to reflect on elections past and prepare for elections to come, and I suspect that after the election we just went through some of you, like me, don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

The truth is that this was a very difficult election year for our party, here in Virginia and all across the country. But we knew it would be that way.

On the national level we were fighting some stiff head winds. The president’s approval rating at an all time low, the war in Iraq very unpopular, and the bottom falling out of the economy 30 days prior to the election. We knew it would be a difficult election year.

And here in Virginia we faced our challenges as well. The demographics of Virginia are changing, and many suburban voters are less inclined to vote Republican than they were just a few short years ago. There are a lot of reasons for that, but we have to recognize that fact.

On the national level and on the state level we have some work to do, and we’re ready to do that work. As I’ve often said, the great thing about Virginia is that there’s an election every year, and today we turn our attention to the future and the elections of 2009.

Now make no mistake about it, 2009 will be another challenging election year for us. But the good news is that we are better positioned for victory in 2009 than we have been in a very long time

While the Democrats are fighting with each other about who their nominees will be, Bob McDonnell and I are working together as a united team with a singular focus - to prepare ourselves and our party for the campaign that lies ahead and for victory next November.

For the past eight months Bob and I have been working together to rebuild the grassroots organization of our party, to unite our party behind our candidacies, to raise the money we’ll need to run effective campaigns, and to begin the process of putting together our vision for the future of Virginia.

In 2009 we will offer the people of Virginia the most experienced ticket to ever seek the top two statewide offices in our state. Bob McDonnell and I have served the people of Virginia in state and local government for the past 20 years and we have the experience to lead Virginia into the future.

We’ve stood strong for the conservative principles and values that have always been the foundation of our Republican Party and we’ll continue to do that. But we also have a record of reaching out, of working on a bipartisan basis to get things done in Richmond.

For example, during my service in the Senate and as Lieutenant Governor I’ve stood strong for conservative values.

      • I’ve worked to keep government small and focused on its core responsibilities.

      • I’ve worked to keep taxes low for families and businesses, and I might add, I’ve opposed every effort to raise taxes during my service in state government.

      • I’ve worked to create a pro-business environment in our state, a fact that has been recognized by organizations like the National Federal Of Independent Businesses, who gave me their Guardian of Small Business Award.

      • And I’ve worked to protect the values Virginians believe in, like the right to life, the sanctity of marriage and the Second Amendment.

But I’ve also been one of the General Assembly’s leading voices on issues like health care, protecting our environment and reforming government to make it work for the people of Virginia and not against them.

I sponsored legislation that created a children’s health insurance program in Virginia. As a result of that program we’re providing basic health care services to thousands of children who didn’t have access to those services just a few short years ago.

I’ve sponsored legislation to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay, without imposing costly regulatory requirements on businesses and families. I even led the effort to reduce the amount of garbage that was being imported to Virginia from other state.

And I’ve been a leading voice calling for government reforms like budgetary transparency, the protection of private property rights, gubernatorial succession and the bipartisan appointment of judges.

That’s a winning record. That’s a record of experience and accomplishment that stands strong for our conservative values and at the same time reaches out to independent voters and clear thinking Democrats who we need to win elections. And Bob McDonnell has a similar record.

But Bob and I will do more than offer the people of Virginia the most experienced and accomplished ticket to ever seek statewide office in Virginia, we’ll also offer the people of Virginia a positive, forward thinking vision – a blueprint for what we need to do to build a better Virginia, and our vision will focus on the issues that Virginia’s families and businesses care most about.

You know, I believe that voters are tired of negative campaigns and the candidates who run them. They want leaders who stand for election on the basis of their own experience, accomplishments and vision for the future; and they’ll reject candidates who think they can get elected by tearing someone else down.

Bob McDonnell and I understand that, and we will run a positive, issue oriented campaign that promotes new ideas for a better Virginia.

We know that Virginia is a great state, a great place to live, work and raise a family, but we also know that we face some serious challenges in our state today, and we are prepared to provide the leadership to find solutions to these challenges.

In April of 2007 I started a program called 100 Ideas For The Future Of Virginia. The purpose of this program was to reach out to business leaders, government leaders, civic leaders and everyday citizens and talk about the challenges facing our state. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Over a period of eight months we held 52 Town Hall Idearaisers in every part of our state and we put together a lot of good ideas on how to address the challenges facing Virginia. And right now, Bob McDonnell and I are working with our Policy Advisory Team and building on these ideas to offer bipartisan, realistic, workable solutions to the challenges we face, and that’s what we’ll talk about in this campaign.

In this campaign we we’ll offer a plan to get our economy moving again. By reducing taxes and unnecessary regulations, by aggressively promoting economic opportunity here at home and around the world, by increasing our investment in economic development and research, and by focusing more attention on strategies to provide economic opportunity in our rural communities, we will once again send the message that Virginia is open for business.

We’ll offer a plan to restore fiscal responsibility to Virginia state government. Unlike the Democrats, we’ll base our budgets on realistic revenue projections and we’ll reign in excessive government spending. We’ll produce budget surpluses, not budget deficits; and we’ll direct our limited state resources to the things that matter most and resist the temptation to try and be everything to everybody and make promises we can’t pay for.

We’ll offer a plan to improve the quality of the educational opportunities we provide to our children, not just by spending more money, but by requiring that our educational resources be used more wisely. By directing more of our educational dollars to the classroom and less to the central office, by providing more meaningful educational choice for parents and students, and by demanding more accountability from everyone involved in our education system, we will begin the process of moving students in American from 21st in the world to 1st in the world when it comes to the quality of education they receive.

We’ll make a higher education more available and more affordable for the sons of daughters of Virginia. You know that it’s getting harder and harder for Virginia’s best students to get into Virginia’s best schools and that has to change. And once they get there it’s getting harder and harder for them to afford being there. Since we lifted the freeze on tuition for in state students in 2002 in state tuition at our four year colleges and universities has increased by more than 90%, more than 100% at our community colleges. Tuition is out of control and that too must change.

And we’ll offer a plan to address the most important issue facing at least two critical regions of our state – transportation. The time has come for us to stop talking about building a transportation system for the 21st century and actually build a transportation system for the 21st century. For seven long years the Democrats have tried a singular approach to addressing our transportation challenges – massive tax increases – and they’ve failed to deliver a solution.

The time has come for real leadership on the issue of transportation, and we’ll provide the leadership that is required to build consensus around a real solution that gets traffic moving again in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads and addresses transportation challenges in other parts of our state as well, and we’ll do it the right way.

My friends, on these and many other issues Bob McDonnell and I will provide the leadership that is necessary to truly move Virginia forward, and we’ll provide the new ideas that are necessary to build a better and more prosperous Virginia, and we’ll do it consistent with our conservative principles and values.

Now don’t misunderstand me. This campaign will not be easy. It will be difficult. And we can’t win this victory on our own.

To be successful on Election Day, which is by the way just 333 days away, Bob and I are going to have to work as hard as we can, and we are going to need each of you standing with us and working with us in that effort.

We’re prepared to do our part, and I know that we can count on each of you to do your part.

In the past 30 days much has been written about the demise of the Republican Party in Virginia, but today is the day when we start showing the pundits that the news of our demise is greatly exaggerated.

Today is the day when we begin the long journey that will carry us back to victory.

Today is the day when we turn the page on the past and begin focusing on the future. A future we can be proud of.

A future that has Bob McDonnell in the Governor’s mansion and Bill Bolling working closely at his side as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

With your help, your prayers and your hard work we will offer the people of Virginia an opportunity to believe again in our party and our state.

We will provide the leadership that is necessary to find solutions to the challenges we face and secure a more prosperous future our children.

My friends, the future starts today!

Crystal Clear Conservative · The Car Czar & More Government Bailouts RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

      cross-posted from The Clarion’s Call:

According to the Washington Post, President Bush and Congressional Democrats have come to an “agreed concept” for the auto-bailout.  The “agreed concept” calls for:

      • “…government to spe[n]d $15 billion in emergency loans to the car companies as soon as next week…”
      • “…President Bush to immediately name a car czar to oversee the bailout…”
      • “…the car czar would be required to revoke the loans unless the companies proved by March 31 that they were implementing a plan to achieve “a positive net present value…”
      • “…if the firms fail to make progress, the car czar would be required to submit to Congress a new plan to restore them to financial viability, the official said, including the option of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.”
      • “If no plan for the long-term survival of the companies were to emerge, the firms would be ineligible for any additional federal assistance”

Has there been any agreement as to how the auto industry has gotten into this situation?

Some say it is over-priced labor; others say it is one-sided international trade; yet others say it is cumbersome government regulations.  Perhaps all of these factors have contributed to the problem with all of these factors having 0ne thing in common: government.  Government writes the labor laws.  Government signs international trade agreements.  Government writes the regulations.

With government at the root of the problem, it is difficult to see how government can devise an adequate solution.  There may be a legitimate argument that government has harmed this vital industry; but, even if this argument is accepted, is the best remedy a bailout, coming from U.S. taxpayers, which imposes a measure of nationalization for this industry?

More importantly, what is the Republican position?  Republicans already went along with $700 billion credit bailout (with $150 billion of pork on top).

Free markets, anyone?  Of course not…no one believes in those anymore,…isn’t that what got us here in the first place?   Besides, the global economy could not take the shock if a free market correction were allowed.  Of course, we should willingly suspend disbelief brought about by the implication that allowing a free market correction implies that we are currently not operating in a free market.

So what about it Republicans?  Do we have a coherent position?  Is it based on any principle that might form the corner-stone for our Party as we propose solutions to this continuing economic nightmare or are we still “position[ing ourselves] for fancy titles associated with a losing effort”?  If Republicans are looking to go along with more bailouts, are they still just looking for the best way to pander instead of leading us back to prosperity?

Maybe Republicans should just cave-in to the media’s demands for bipartisanship, join with the majority of the country, hope for the best, and beg for Obama to save us.

      Save us from what?

      From ourselves.

According to a recent Heritage Foundation web memo, it appears that the Big Three (Ford, GM and Chrysler) are paying the UAW workers over $70 an hour in wages and benefits.   However, if the auto industry is forced into bankruptcy protection, they could be ordered to cut back on wages and benefits.   This is proof that the UAW has had a stranglehold on the auto industry and how they need to be eliminated entirely.

Now, I wonder what the UAW will do about this.  The right thing to do would be for the UAW to cut back on their overwhelming influence and allow the auto industry to get back on track to get Detroit moving again.  The taxpayers should not be forced into paying for the bailout of an union based industry.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Obama and Blagojevich…Sitting in a Tree RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Face it President-elect Obama, you are forever tied with Illinois Governor Rod “Jailbird” Blagojevich.  You have decided to throw him under the bus, just like you have with every person who has ever been called for scrutiny, corruption, etc.

According to ABC News’ Political Punch, Obama made this statement to the press.

“Obviously like the rest of the people of Illinois I am saddened and sobered by the news that came out of the US attorney’s office today,” said President-elect Obama this afternoon in Chicago, speaking of the criminal complaint against Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich for corruption. “But as this is a ongoing investigation involving the governor I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to comment on the issue at this time.”

Asked what contact he’d had with the governor’s office about his replacement in the Senate, President-elect Obama today said “I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.”

Hmm…sounds interesting, considering that Obama’s campaign advisor, David Axelrod defended Blagojevich on FOX News in regards to picking Obama’s successor in the Senate.

Instead of change and hope, Obama’s ties to the recent Blagojevich scandal leads me to brand this administration as Chicago Corruption.   It took forever for this to surface, and it should have happened prior to the election.

As you know, I am vehemently against the auto industry bailouts.  I do not believe it is the role of the government to bail out businesses and Wall Street.  There are other means to solving this crisis, like bankruptcy declarations, etc.  The CATO Institute has a compelling video about the bailouts featuring Dan Ikenson.

Call your Senators and Congressmen and demand that they vote against the bailouts to promote fiscal prosperity for America.   You should mention that it was not the vision of our founding fathers to bailout American businesses who are simply failing, because of a lack of innovation and being fiscally irresponsible.  The Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121.

      Cross-Posted from The Clarion’s Call:

Here’s an AP video regarding the situation in Chicago with the closing of Republic Windows & Doors:

THE SITUATION: Republic Windows & Doors is unable to secure credit from Bank of America to continue operations.  Republic Windows & Doors thus gave its union workers 3 days notice of layoffs instead of the 60 days required by law.

THE CONSEQUENCES: Union workers are demanding vacation and severance pay.

REPUBLIC WINDOWS & DOORS ARGUMENT: Bank of America will not let Republic Windows & Doors make payment.

UNION WORKERS’ ARGUMENT: Bank of America received bailout money for the purpose of extending credit to Republic Windows & Doors so that it can meet union workers‘ demands.

      Do you see it coming?

The tidal waves of failing businesses and the endless demands for the bailout money to be used so that everyone can get theirs.  When is it going to end?

Will there be enough money?  Will we have to borrow more?  Will we have to print more?  Will our money even be worth anything?

Can labor laws, designed to protect workers, provide for a thriving economy?

Can government direct prosperity?  Should it?

Will we hit a point when it is too late to do anything?

Crystal Clear Conservative · Is the Auto Industry Bailout Headed for a Filibuster? RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

I hope so.  According to The Politico, Sen. Richard Shelby has threatened to filibuster any bailout geared towards the auto industry.  Shelby was on FOX News Sunday with Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), who has been advocating for an auto industry bailout.

      Shelby made some good points:

But Shelby, who also voted against the $700 bailout bill for the financial industry, called it a “bridge loan to nowhere,” and said General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have to undergo a fundamental restructuring of their operations rather than look for federal help.

He also predicted auto industry executives would soon come back to Washington looking for more money, beyond any assistance they are given now.

“This is a down payment on many billions to come,” Shelby warned. “This is not something that happened overnight. This is 30 years in the making. These companies basically have failed or are failing. They probably need, according to some people, about 60 percent of the management to go, and about 40 percent downsize of the workers.”

Shelby also threatened a filibuster of any auto aid agreement, but was unsure whether he had the votes to sustain it.

Hopefully, Shelby and other legislators who believe in the cause of limited government and fiscal accountability will stand behind a filibuster and not back down.  No more bailouts from the Federal government, plain and simple.

Crystal Clear Conservative · Brownlee Report Mentions CCC RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

One would think that John Brownlee’s campaign would do their research before sending out their report.  As someone who runs the Bloggers 4 Ken Cuccinelli blog, you would think they would not want to quote their opponent’s supporter.   However, I was surprised to have received their report to find that they borrowed a quote from me to twist it in their favor.  Yes, this race is too close to call, but it is not in your favor, Mr. Brownlee.

Another interesting point from this report is that Brownlee quoted undecided voters in his statistics.  The straw poll was decided based on the people who were able to cast the votes.   This means that people had their minds made up when voting.  Ken Cuccinelli won the Straw Poll and Brownlee was in second place.  Clearly, more people support Cuccinelli, and the undecided vote would not have a factor, since it was a straw poll.  Another additional factor to consider:  the luncheon was right after the debate.  More people were concerned about getting good seats at the luncheon and decided to go upstairs without casting a vote.   This is not to say that they were undecided voters.

On Saturday morning at the Advance, attendees had the opportunity to see our three candidates for Attorney General meet in their first debate (more on that below).  After the debate, a straw poll was held.  No candidate received a majority of the vote (remember a candidate in a convention must receive a majority in order to receive the nomination).

320 votes were cast in the poll; Ken Cuccinelli received 153 (47.8%), John Brownlee received 123 (38.4%) and David Foster Received 44 (13.8%).  RPV staff confirms there were 530+ registrants for the Advance, meaning at least 210 Republican registrants did not vote and may be undecided at this time in the Attorney General contest.  Considering the 210 as undecided, the race stands at:

      Undecided:         39.6%
      Cuccinelli:          28.9%
      BROWNLEE:     23.2%
      Foster:                8.3%

We are excited and encouraged by these results.  First and foremost, the straw poll shows the race for Attorney General is wide open.  One of our opponent’s primary arguments to voters is that he is the inevitable nominee.  This past weekend’s gathering has laid that argument to rest.  As the blog Crystal Clear Conservative puts it, “…this race is way too close to call.  It will be a tight race until the Convention on [May 30].”

There is still a lot of time left to get delegates for the Convention on May 30.  I am supporting Ken Cuccinelli, as he will stand on behalf for our core principles and adhere to the Constitution.  From the results at the AG debate on Saturday, Cuccinelli offers the experience and understanding needed for the office of Attorney General.
