Federal Employees owe
$1,000,000,000
in back taxes.

The LA Times writes.....Privacy laws prevent release of individual tax delinquent’s names. But we do know that as of the end of 2009, 41 people inside Obama’s very own White House owe the government they’re allegedly running a total of $831,055 in back taxes. That would cover a lot of special chocolate desserts in the White House Mess.

The Washington Post writes.... Capitol Hill employees owed $9.3 million in overdue taxes at the end of last year, a sliver of the $1 billion owed by federal workers nationwide but one with potential political ramifications for members of Congress.

Shouldn't that be cause for disqualification for employment?
Shouldn't it be cause for termination if a determination is made that it was willful?

Thousands of residents have been evacuated outside Boulder, Colorado, home of the University of Colorado, because of a wildfire that has destroyed more than 170 homes and thousands of acres of land in a fire that grows daily with the help of dry conditions and high winds gusting up to 40 mph. Many Boulder residents were put on alert Thursday afternoon to be prepared if the winds shift, possibly driving the fire into the city itself.

Fourmile Canyon heads west out of the city into the mountains where the Rocky Mountains are steep and rugged and beautiful, dotted with cabins and home as the road makes its way toward old mining towns. The land is now charred as firefighters struggle with nature.

Prayers for the people of Boulder and the firefighters....

September has turned out to be a busy month with many activities on the calendar. I've been out and about this week ...

Yesterday Barb and I drove up to Humpback Rock picnic area, carrying packed lunches and our chairs, prepared to spend time catching up on life and hearing about her recent trip to Alaska. We spent four hours yakking in the coolness of the mountains ... sweaters required. Hope to have photos when I have time....

After shopping in Waynesboro this morning, met a friend for lunch at historic downtown Staunton's Clock Tower restaurant. Quesadillas were on tap....

SWAC Huband and I attended an event hosted by the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton for the Board of Trustees, Directors, and Foundation Board in preparation for Friday's board meetings. The staff and fellow board members were incredibly welcoming.

I was honored to meet Dr. Nwachukwu Anthony Anakwenze who had flown in from California for the trustees meeting. He is Chairman and CEO of Global Care Medical Group LPA, recently returning from a trip to Africa with Doctors Without Borders. Originally from Nigeria, he had attended college in the U.S. and established a large, successful practice in California. He jokingly said he had checked the climate of various areas of the United States, looking for some place that was not too cold and he didn't want snow! He settled on the San Diego area of California.

Dr. Anakwenze had traveled with FCM's executive director John Avoli to Nigeria to do background research for the African Farm, the newest addition to the Frontier Culture Museum that will open September 18. He was a remarkable man.

As we approach 9/11, I feel a sadness overtaking me remembering that awful day in America's history. Every night there are documentaries on cable channels about it ... I constantly research and read about victims, survivors, and the rescuers.

We plan to fly our 20 Americans flags in front of the house Saturday in memory of those who died, in honor of those who risked their lives to save them, and as a reminder that we should never forget September 11, 2001. God bless the passengers of United Flight 93 and President George W. Bush's leadership as America made its way through those troubled days....

SWAC Girl · DMV changes proof of legal presence RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that the Department of Motor Vehicles will suspend acceptance of the federally-issued Employment Authorization Document (I-766) as proof of legal presence in the United States, a condition of obtaining a driver's license or identification card in Virginia. This precautionary action is the result of concerns over the document's reliability as evidence of an individual's federal government authorization to be in the country. The card, issued by the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service arm of the Department of Homeland Security, is obtained by individuals temporarily authorized to work in the U. S., even if the individual is in a pending deportation status.

The concerns surfaced in August after an alleged drunk driver was charged in Prince William County with a fatal crash in which one person died and two others were critically injured. Police say 23-year-old Carlos Martinelly Montano from Bolivia had been reported to ICE after two previous drunk driving convictions in 2007 and 2008, but was released pending a deportation hearing.

Police report that Montano received an Employment Authorization Document in January 2009 while federal deportation actions were pending, and subsequently used the document to prove legal presence while applying for a Virginia ID card in accordance with current Virginia law. It is important to note that Montano did not have a Virginia driver’s license at the time of the crash.

Speaking about the decision to suspend use of I-766 documents, Governor McDonnell commented, “The integrity of the credentials issued by the Commonwealth is of the utmost importance. We must ensure that documents accepted as proof of legal presence are reliable. Virginia law is clear in the requirement that an individual be lawfully in the United States to be eligible for an identification card or to have the privilege to drive.”

DMV will seek additional guidance from the Attorney General regarding federal documents that should be accepted going forward as proof of legal presence.

Of the 21 documents DMV continues to accept as proof of an applicant's lawful status, 20 are issued by the federal government, including 12 issued by U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service.

Are they hurting Mr.Gibbs?
What a moron.

The people making 250K a year are not spending as much money. The people making 40K a year are not spending as much money. The 84 million people not in the workforce are not spending as much money. The 14,860,000 unemployed are not spending as much money.

There are many reasons. Many are not spending money because my investment income went into the crapper. They don't have as much to spend. Their annual income has decreased. Many are also not spending because of the uncertainty of the economy. Sooner or later, someone is going to have to pay the piper. Our debt will come due.

Gibbs talks about those with 250K incomes. Those people are not as bad off as someone with a 40K income. That is obvious.
The point he neglects is if someone had a job that pays $250K and had investment income paying $50K in 2006, and their income kept pace with inflation. They would have a $270K income and $0 from investments. Their lifestyle changed dramatically. And a net loss of $30K a year in 2006 dollars. If they bought a house at the height of the market in 2006 for 2 1/2 times their salary, $625K and put 20% down, they had a mortgage of $500,000. Say they were in the booming Phoenix Arizona market. As of March 2009, the Phoenix home market dropped 48%. That means their house is now worth $325,000, and they are still paying $2700 a month on his mortgage. Are they hurting Mr.Gibbs? They still owes $467K on a $325K house. Are they hurting Mr. Gibbs? They are now paying more for their health care, and unsure of what Obamacare will do to the health care costs. Are They hurting Mr. Gibbs? Their kids college tuition grew at 7.1% a year. They were paying $20K in 2006, They are paying $26K now. Are they hurting Mr.Gibbs? Are they pulling back?

"For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands." -- Isaiah 55:12-13

It is a tribute to Dick Dudley that the chapel at Reynolds-Hamrick Funeral Home in Waynesboro was overflowing today with friends and family who were there to honor him. The chapel filled up, a side room filled, and overflow was standing at the back of the chapel and in the hallway.

Such was this gentleman ... rich in friends ... rich in family ... rich in his love of God and country.

As the pastor spoke, he recalled all that was Dick Dudley ... his passion for planning down to the nth detail, his expectation of a day's work for a day's pay, his never expecting something out of others that he himself would not do; his love of hunting and the outdoors and UVA and his wife and children. Some stories made one weep ... others made one laugh.

Those attending joined in singing "How Great Thou Art," a song that made me think of my grandmother's funeral many years ago when I was a teenager ... the awesomeness of that beautiful song.

A gentleman who was there who had worked Republican HQs with me in the past asked how I knew Mr. Dudley, and I told about how he would come into HQs or be at some event, and how he emailed jokes and political info. He was nice and he was funny, and it was a long time before I even realized he was Mrs. Betty Landes' brother and Del. Steve Landes' uncle.

Two things really stuck with me as I left after the funeral. One was the verse at the beginning of this post. The second was based on Proverbs 18:24 that speaks of the love of Christ: "... there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."

If there is such a thing, it was a beautiful day for a funeral. Mr. Dudley was buried this afternoon at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

The Government can't spend a penny on churches here, but can spend millions on foreign mosques.

This year, the Obama administration will spend nearly $6 million to restore 63 historic and cultural sites, including mosques and minarets, in 55 nations, according to State Department documents.
That includes $76,000 for a 16th century mosque in China, $67,000 for a mosque in Pakistan, $77,000 to restore minarets in Nigeria and Mauritania, and $50,000 for an Islamic Monument in India. See the AP story here

Why don't we save $6million and apply it to US debt?
Yeah I know it is only 2 cents per person, but we have to start somewhere. Foreign aid is a few dollars per person. Lets trim it back. Lets trim back on everything. There are things we must have, and things that are nice to have. Let's eliminate "Nice to have" until we can pay for what "we must have"

Colo. student told to remove American flags from truck

Jeremy Stoppel, 16, mounted two 3'x5' flags on his Ford pickup truck in the tradition of his father and brother to show his American pride, to salute a cousin currently serving in the U.S. Navy, and to honor the upcoming anniversary of 9/11. After the new, young driver squealed his tires in the school parking lot and was ticketed, resulting in the loss of his parking pass for two weeks, a school security officer ordered him to remove the flags because, she said, they could make some students of different nationalities feel uncomfortable.

This is the week leading up to 9/11, Patriot's Day, a time to pause and reflect on the worst act of terrorism to ever hit America, resulting in the deaths of 3,000 in Pennsylvania, the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon.

There will be documentaries throughout the week on the 9/11 tragedy beginning last night on National Geographic Channel with "Inside 9/11" to be followed tonight with "Giuliani's 9/11" about then-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's superb leadership during the 9/11 crisis.

Bob also notes at The Journey that we must never forget as he posts about a vision to remember those who died.

I will never forget that day and what came after. Many others feel the same while some have moved on and appear to have forgotten ... still others were too young for it to make much of an impact on their lives.

Its significance in history must not be overlooked or we are doomed to have a repeat of terrorism coming to our shores.

Chickory blooms in Shenandoah Valley.

September is here ... summer is waning ... welcomed cooler temps moved in over the weekend with brisk 40s overnight and breezy comfortable 70s during the day. It's been a relaxed Labor Day holiday grilling out with friends and family, hanging out on the deck and under the trees, and watching the butterflies fluttering through the yard, perhaps the beginning of flights south? Watching a hummingbird working the flowers in the front porch window boxes is a reminder that he, too, will soon take refuge in a warmer climate to wait out the upcoming winter months.

Some have today off from work while others had to report as usual. Some schools are out while others are carrying on with classes. Yet other school systems will open for their first day of classes tomorrow.

Fall in the mountains is a special time as crisp nights and warm days begin the changing of leaf color that eventually works its way down the slopes. I look forward each year to enjoying the seasons ... and the cycle of life continues.

It's late summer in the Shenandoah Valley....

SWAC Girl · Could Democrats lose it all in November? RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

Cross-posted at The Washington Examiner

Indications from many sources continue to suggest that November could be a sledge-hammer-to-the-forehead election for Democrats. Political pundits have watched as poll numbers have worsened even during this "summer of recovery," as it was billed by Democratic President Barack Obama ... but there appears to be no recovery in sight.

Democrat cheer leaders began the summer by publicly dismissing the doom-and-gloom predictions as they tried to rally the troops and Democratic candidates even as the President's approval rating dipped to 46% and three-quarters of those polled disapproved of Congress.

That "summer of recovery" has turned into the Summer of Economic Discontent, according to Michael Boskin, an economics professor at Stanford University, who wrote in the Wall Street Journal:
The Obama administration's "summer of recovery" has morphed into a summer of economic discontent amid anxiety over the weakening economy. The greater than 4% growth and less than 8% unemployment envisioned by the president's economic team are nowhere to be seen. Almost everything that is supposed to be up—the economic growth rate, the stock market, bond yields—is down. And almost everything that is supposed to be down—unemployment-insurance claims, new mortgage delinquencies—is up.
The rosy outlook Democrats had at the beginning of summer is not so rosy in September as some begin to realize they may be hit with a November landslide. Sean Trende wrote in Real Clear Politics:
There has been a flurry of political stories in recent weeks about the electoral difficulties Democrats face this fall. It seems Washington is finally catching on to the fact that the Democrats' hold on the House is in dire jeopardy, and that a 1994-style, 52-seat pickup is a real possibility.
"November is coming," as many like to point out. Things haven't worked out quite the way liberals thought they would, as noted by Michael Barone, senior political analyst at the Washington Examiner, who pointed out:
Scads of liberals gleefully predicted that the financial crisis and deep recession would destroy Americans' faith in markets and increase their confidence in Big Government. Many conservatives gloomily feared they were right.

Hasn't happened. If anything, public opinion has moved in the other direction, with most Americans rejecting the stimulus package and the health care bill, denying that government action is needed to address global warming, expressing negative feelings about labor unions.
Perhaps the most telling of all is from within the Obama administration itself. Dana Milbank at the Washington Post attended Wednesday's lunch at the National Press Club featuring the farewell speech of the departing Christina Romer, chairman of President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers. As Milbank described, Romer dished up indigestion for many with her report on the economy:
She had no idea how bad the economic collapse would be. She still doesn't understand exactly why it was so bad. The response to the collapse was inadequate. And she doesn't have much of an idea about how to fix things.
As soon as Obama was sworn in, Democrats pushed, shoved, and strong-armed their progressive agenda through Congress at break-neck speed, spending taxpayer money at a rate voters had not seen before. It was too much, too fast -- and alarmed Americans took action a mere two months into Obama's term by publicly protesting on the streets, something rarely seen in conservative ranks until 2009.

Perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back was the overwhelming, overreaching government-controlled health care reform bill, popularly called ObamaCare, that was passed in March. Over 2,000 pages long, the bill had not been read by many of the very Democrats who were pushing for its passage, an admittance that did not sit well with Americans who had been brought up to "read the fine print."

Questions from an alarmed electorate brought only dodging and weaving from Democrats, many who refused to hold town hall meetings or respond to phone calls from worried constituents who were arrogantly told they would learn the details after the bill was passed.

Late-night marathon sessions gave the appearance of brow-beating with the House passing the bill on Christmas Eve 2009 and the Senate confirming in March. The vote for ObamaCare, against the wishes of the majority of American taxpayers, proved to be the end of some political careers.

Because of multi-issue discontent, conventional thinking indicated Republicans would pick up the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives with conservative estimates of 47-52 seats going to the GOP. The new twist in November's elections is that a number of political pundits are now suggesting the U.S. Senate, once thought to be safely in Democratic hands, could also fall into Republican control. The GOP needs 10 seats and all estimates are giving them a relatively solid 8-seat gain with the possibility of one or two more. Republicans are also expected to add to their gubernatorial numbers with 6-8 pick-ups.

University of Virginia political professor and guru Larry Sabato sees a trend in past elections that suggests this could be another historic November:
If the Republican wave on November 2 is as large as some polls are suggesting it may be, then the surprise on election night could be a full GOP takeover. Since World War II, the House of Representatives has flipped parties on six occasions (1946, 1948, 1952, 1954, 1994, and 2006). Every time, the Senate flipped too, even when it had not been predicted to do so.
How could Barack Obama, the darling of the left who swept into office in 2008, fall so far so fast? Byron York, chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, looked at how the Democrats threw away their advantage over the GOP:
Many political observers were stunned by the new Gallup poll showing the Republican party with a 10-point advantage in the so-called "generic ballot" question. Now we have a better idea how that happened.

According to new, more detailed Gallup numbers, Democratic advantages on issues like health care, the economy, and handling corruption in government have simply disappeared. Democratic leads that were enormous when the party took control of Congress in 2006 have dwindled to nothing or have now become Republican advantages.
His article goes much more into detail, a good read for trying to understand what happened to the Democratic majority in Congress.

As America slips into the fall campaign season, a few Democrats cling to the hope that the outcome for their side will be better than predicted. However, others see the handwriting on the wall even as they study the polls and look at past elections and, perhaps most telling, as they look at the mood of America. November is coming and for Democrats that may spell disaster.

SWAC Girl · Shenandoah ... "daughter of the stars" RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

With temperatures in the mid 50s tonight, I spent some time on the deck gazing at the September sky absolutely full of stars. What a beautiful sight!

I tried to identify some constellations ... was that the Big Dipper that seemed to be over the house? The Milky Way was overhead with millions of stars splashed across the darkened sky. Venus was bright in the WSW sky while Jupiter, shining bright and almost the closest to earth it's been since 1951, could be seen in the east.

I am always in awe when watching the night sky, the stars, the hugeness of it all ... sitting on a mountain top brings it even closer ... and it makes me feel closer to God. As the temperature dips toward the 40s for a second night in a row, the moonless sky provides a light show unmatched by anything that is man-made. It truly is the Shenandoah ... "daughter of the stars."

YankeePhil · Local Principal Gets letter from Rutherford Institute. RSS Comment Feed Bookmark on del.icio.us

The Rutherford Institute, a Virginia-based civil liberties group, sent a letter to Don Curtis, principal of Wilson Middle School in Fishersville, Va. according to the World Net Daily
that explained how the First Amendment relates to school clubs.

The principal, who some allege, threatened to fire any teacher who helped with the organization of a campus Fellowship of Christian Athletes club. It sounds that he was telling the staff to be professional and to be on solid legal foundation.
I am sure it was misinterpreted by some the staff and the media. He told WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Va the "tone" of his memo to faculty members "was taken out of context." Those who know the principal, know he is a straight shooter. He is the proud father of an Eagle Scout.

The text of his letter includes......
"As I trust common sense and your elementary knowledge of the law should remind you, the Constitution includes an amendment that expects 'The government will not establish any religion.'
This has been legally stated and supported through case law, interpreted to mean for schools that the school or its employees will not perpetuate, support or establish any religion at school," the principal's note said.
"This means teachers can't support or participate in religious activities while in the official role of a teacher.
Be as religious as you want when you're not in your official role as a teacher. Your official role as a teacher starts anytime you're involved with students.
"Please check with me or your attorney if you need clarification so I can avoid termination proceedings for those of you that don't believe me or wish to test this concept," Curtis wrote. "I'm being somewhat of a smart a&*, but I trust 'You're feeling me!'"
